Three oxygen steps
500 million years is one pulse, not the switch.
Callisto through Earth
Oxygen rose in steps. 500 million years is one pulse.
The air did not become breathable in one year. Oxygen rose in steps, and “breathable” depends who is breathing. Microbes were using oxygen long before any animal could. A popular line parks the whole story at 500 million years — a late-Cambrian carbon pulse called SPICE. That pulse is real. It is not the invention of oxygen, and it is not the first animal.
This site reads Io through Mars as consecutive stages of one kind of planet, with living Earth as the present chapter. Living Earth opens near 567 million years. The question here is only which oxygen clocks sit in that door, and which sit earlier.
The ordinary view
The first permanent free oxygen is the Great Oxidation Event, about 2.4 to 2.3 billion years ago. The air after that was still a tiny fraction of today. A later smear — sometimes called the Neoproterozoic Oxygenation Event — runs from about 800 to 540 million years. It is a name for a debated, swinging rise, not a single dated sky.
The animals we can point at arrive late in that smear. Ediacaran bodies sit near 575 to 541 million years. The Cambrian radiation follows. Mid-Paleozoic land plants and charcoal mark air closer to a modern lung, still inside living Earth and well after the first named animals. Cambrian animals needed something like a tenth of present oxygen, not a modern lungful.
Which clock is which
| Clock | What it is | What it is not |
|---|---|---|
| GOE ~2.4–2.3 Ga | Oxygen stays in the air for good, still a tiny share | Animal air, or the open of living Earth |
| NOE ~800–540 Ma | A name for a debated, swinging rise | A zoo at 800 Ma, or a single switch |
| Ediacaran–Cambrian bodies ~575–541 Ma | The first animals most workers will name | Proof the cycle oxygenated the planet |
| SPICE ~500 Ma | A short late-Cambrian carbon-and-oxygen pulse | When oxygen was invented |
| Land plants / charcoal ~470–400 Ma | Air closer to a modern lung | The start of living Earth |
| Cycle window ~567 Myr | A modeling choice on this site | A photosynthesis law |
On this reading
Living Earth, on this reading, opens near 567 million years. The first named animal bodies sit in that door. The 565-million-year quiet-field reading sits in the same bin. SPICE at 500 million years is a pulse inside the chapter, not the latch that opened it.
800 million years falls in Mars time on the same ruler. That is a tension only if animal-viable water is treated as animals. It is not. No accepted animal bodies sit at 800 million years. The GOE sits much earlier, in late Callisto to Titan time. That is a different step.
What would move a clock
Fossil windows already places first life, the GOE, eukaryotes, ice, and the Cambrian. This page earns its keep only if the oxygen clocks can fail on their own. Table 2 is that test.
| Clock | Window on this ruler | What would move it |
|---|---|---|
| GOE ~2.4–2.3 Ga | Late Callisto into Titan | A permanent rise firmly before 2.84 Ga, or after 1.70 Ga |
| NOE smear ~800–540 Ma | Late Mars into living Earth | A single dated sky at 800 Ma with named animals |
| Ediacaran–Cambrian bodies | Living-Earth door | Named animals firmly before 600 Ma |
| SPICE ~500 Ma | Inside living Earth | Treating the pulse as the invention of oxygen |
| Modern-like air ~470–400 Ma | Still inside living Earth | Moving the living-Earth open to the mid-Paleozoic |
What would weaken this
A field of undisputed animal bodies at 800 million years would put animals in Mars time on this ruler. A demonstration that Ediacaran fossils are only algae would take the first-bodies pin off the living-Earth door. A GOE parked in the mid-Archean would take that step off Callisto–Titan. Neither result would prove a handoff.
What this page holds
Oxygen rose in steps. 500 million years is one pulse, not the switch. The first animals we can name sit at the open of living Earth. Modern-like air comes later, still in that chapter. The GOE is a different step, much earlier. This site reads those worlds as consecutive stages. The clocks are the measurement. The record does not prove the handoff.
